There is no single universal maximum sand particle size for a“sand discharge electric pump.”The correct value depends on the pump class:a small submersible sand-drainage pump,a medium electric sludge pump, and a heavy dredging sand pump are designed for very different solid sizes. In practice, most electric sand discharge pumps handle particles from 10 mm to about 50 mm,while purpose-built electric dredging pumps can pass up to 120 mm,and large dredge pumps can handle much coarser material.
Typical Range by Pump Type
1.Mine/sewage sand discharge electric pumps
Small submersible sand pumps used for mine drainage, construction silt,or municipal sandy water usually specify a modest maximum solid size.
•Common rating:10 mm
•Some 3-inch electric sand pumps:up to 50 mm
•Manufacturer rule often stated as:solid diameter should not exceed the smallest flow-passage dimension of the pump
These pumps are built for sandy water, sludge, coal fines, and small debris—not coarse gravel or cobbles.
2.Submersible electric dredging sand pumps
Electric submersible dredge pumps are designed for river sand, silt, gravel, and slurry transport. They use wide-flow impellers and high-chrome wear parts.
•Typical max particle size:up to 120 mm
•Example models list 21–45 mm for smaller units,120 mm for heavy-duty dredge versions
•Some slurry-type submersible sand pumps list 10–60 mm,depending on discharge diameter
This class is the most common answer for“electric sand discharge pump”in dredging work.
3.Heavy dredge pumps and gravel pumps
Large horizontal dredge pumps or cutter-suction dredge pumps are not always electric-motor submersible units, but they define the upper limit of sand/gravel handling.
•Sand dredge pumps:up to 400 mm in large AWN-class units
•Gravel pumps:82–241 mm
•Submersible dredge packages:often up to 170 mm
These are used when the stream contains gravel, pebbles, shell,or cobble-sized solids.
Practical Maximum You Can Rely On
For a standard electric sand discharge pump:
•Light-duty sand pump:up to 10 mm
•Industrial/submersible sand pump:up to 20–50 mm
•Electric dredging sand pump:up to 120 mm
•Large dredge pump system:beyond 120 mm,sometimes several hundred mm
If a supplier simply says“max sand particle size,”always ask for the exact model’s“max solid diameter”or“max passing particle.”
Why the Limit Varies
The maximum particle size is not only about motor power. It is mainly limited by:
1.Impeller passage width
Wide-channel or semi-open impellers pass larger solids.
2.Discharge diameter
A 2–3 inch pump cannot pass the same grain size as an 8–12 inch pump.
3.Solids concentration
Even if a single stone fits, high sand concentration increases clogging and wear.
4.Wear material
High-chrome alloy,Ni-Hard,or rubber-lined wet ends are needed for abrasive sand.
5.Intake strainer
Many submersible sand pumps use a strainer to block oversized debris from reaching the impeller.
Manufacturer Rule of Thumb
A common specification principle is:
Max particle diameter≤smallest clear passage in the pump hydraulic channel.
Some mine pumps explicitly state that the maximum solid diameter should not be greater than about half the minimum flow-section dimension.Exceeding this causes:
•impeller jamming
•casing or vane breakage
•mechanical seal failure
•rapid wear and loss of head
Selection Recommendations
When choosing a sand discharge electric pump, confirm:
•maximum particle diameter in mm
•sand/gravel mix percentage by weight
•discharge pipe size
•required flow and head
•whether gravel,shell,or cobbles are present
•impeller type:closed,semi-open,open,or vortex
•wear-part material
As a safe guide:
•Sandy water only→10–25 mm pump
•Sand with fine gravel→25–50 mm pump
•River dredging sand/gravel→50–120 mm pump
•Cobble/gravel dredging→dedicated dredge pump rated above 120 mm
A sand discharge electric pump typically handles sand particles up to 10–50 mm in normal industrial models. For submersible electric dredging pumps, the usual maximum is around 120 mm.Large dredge pumps can handle substantially bigger solids, but those are specialized gravel/dredge units rather than standard sand discharge pumps
